Is Dermaplaning Good for Acne-Prone Skin? An Esthetician’s Perspective from Westchester County, NY

By Mary Luisa, Licensed Esthetician | Luisa Lempe Aesthetics |

As a licensed Esthetician in Croton-on-Hudson, I’ve treated hundreds of clients curious about dermaplaning. One of the most common questions I hear is: “Is dermaplaning good for acne-prone skin?”

Let’s break down why tallow isn’t the holy grail it’s hyped up to be — and why, in many cases, it could be doing more harm than good.

Quick Answer:

Dermaplaning is safe and effective for all skin types, including those prone to non-inflamed acne (blackheads, congestion). However, I don’t recommend it during an active inflamed breakout.

Benefits:

  • Instantly removes peach fuzz (vellus hair)

  • Gently exfoliates dull, dead skin cells

  • Creates a smooth base for makeup

  • Helps skincare products absorb more effectively

When to Avoid:

  • Active, inflamed acne

  • Open cuts or wounds

  • Severe eczema or psoriasis flare-ups

How I Do It Differently:

In my treatment room, I pair dermaplaning with calming serums and SPF to protect and correct pigmentation. Every session is customized based on your skin condition that day.
